There’s nothing like summer boating in Hawaii. Whether you’re chasing tuna off the Kona Coast, cruising to a day-use mooring, or just enjoying a day on the water with friends, now is the time to make sure your boat is dialed in and ready.
At Pacific Boats & Yachts, we work with boaters every day—new owners, seasoned captains, and everyone in between. So we’ve put together a local’s guide to getting your boat ready for the summer season.
1. Start with a Systems Check
Before you even pull off the dock:
-
Check your bilge to confirm your plug is installed correctly and not leaking
-
Run your engines, test your shifting and steering—listen for anything unusual
-
Test your bilge pumps and check your battery voltage—Hawaii humidity can be hard on electrical systems.
-
Check for corrosion, especially if your boat sat idle during the off-season.
Need a professional eye? We can connect you with local marine techs right here at Honokohau Harbor.
2. Safety Gear: Don’t Guess—Check
If you’re boarded by the Coast Guard or DLNR, having the right gear isn’t optional. Make sure your:
-
Life jackets are in good shape
-
Fire extinguishers are charged and accessible
-
Visual distress signals are current
-
Navigation lights work (check this at night!)
Bonus tip: Replace your first aid kit supplies—it’s often the most overlooked item on the boat.
3. Electronics and Navigation: Update Before You Launch
Even the best gear needs a refresh:
-
Update your GPS and chartplotter software
-
Test your VHF radio
-
Sync your sonar or fishfinder systems—especially if you’re using side-scan or LiveScope for pelagics
Both Steiger Craft and Scout Boats in our inventory come with top-tier electronics, but any system should be tested if it’s been sitting for months.
4. Protect Your Investment
Sun, salt, and heavy use will take their toll. Now’s a great time to:
-
Wash and wax the hull
-
Clean canvas, cushions, and nonskid
-
Apply UV protection or ceramic coatings to keep surfaces looking new
Want help deciding between wax, sealants, or ceramic? Check out our recent blog post—or stop by the office and we’ll walk you through it.
5. Stock Up for Adventure
Every boat trip runs smoother when you’re prepared. Here’s what experienced local boaters never leave without:
-
Extra water and sunscreen
-
A dry bag with towels, phone chargers, and backup clothes
-
A cooler stocked and ready
-
Spare lines, fenders, and an anchor you trust (for use in sand or emergencies)
You know how quickly weather can change in island waters. Prep for a good time—and for the unexpected.
