Boating in Hawaiʻi is tough on finishes — salt, UV, constant moisture, and year-round use all take a toll. If you’ve owned a fiberglass boat for more than a season or two, you’ve probably noticed the dulling, chalking, or fading that shows up on the gel coat.
The good news: with the right approach, gel coat can be restored — and with the right protection, it can stay looking great much longer.
As a Starke Yacht Care Certified Installer, we work with boats every day that need everything from light polishing to full restoration. Here’s what every boat owner should know about caring for their gel coat and keeping that deep, glossy finish.
What exactly is gel coat?
Gel coat is the colored outer layer of fiberglass boats. It isn’t paint — it’s a resin-based coating that provides:
-
A smooth, glossy finish
-
A barrier against water intrusion
-
The “color” and shine of the boat
Because gel coat is porous and relatively soft compared to marine paint, it’s especially vulnerable to oxidation and staining — particularly in sunny, salty places like Hawaiʻi.
Why gel coat fades — especially in Hawaiʻi
Over time, gel coat loses oils and becomes chalky and porous. A few big culprits:
-
UV exposure — sunlight breaks down the surface
-
Salt — crystals attract and hold moisture, accelerating oxidation
-
Harsh cleaners — strip protective waxes and dry the surface
-
Lack of protection — uncoated gel coat oxidizes faster
Once oxidation sets in, regular washing alone won’t bring the shine back.
The right way to restore gel coat
Every boat is different, but most restorations follow a careful, step-by-step process:
-
Deep wash and decontamination
Remove salt, buildup, stains, rust, and any old wax. -
Inspection under good light
Identify oxidation level, scratches, previous repairs, and thin areas. -
Wet sanding and compounding (if needed)
Carefully levels the surface and removes deeper oxidation without taking off more material than necessary. -
Polishing
Refines the finish and brings back gloss. -
Surface prep
Oils and residues are removed so the coating bonds properly. -
Protective coating
This is what helps “lock in” the shine and slow future oxidation.
The goal isn’t to grind away gel coat — it’s to restore it carefully, protect it, and extend its life. Polishing brings back the shine — protection helps keep it there.
Why we use Starke Yacht Care coatings
We’ve worked with many products over the years, and Starke’s system has become our go-to for gel coat protection. Starke Yacht Care builds a complete marine care system — from compounds and polishes to long-term coatings and maintenance sealants — all designed to work together on fiberglass in harsh saltwater environments.
When properly applied, these coatings help:
-
Repel salt, grime, and stains
-
Reduce oxidation over time
-
Make washing faster and easier
-
Extend the results of restoration work
In many cases, owners are surprised at how little effort it takes to keep the boat looking clean once coated — typically just gentle washing and periodic light maintenance. And because we’re certified, we follow Starke’s installation standards and use the correct prep steps, tools, and cure times so the coating performs the way it should.
When should you consider restoration or coating?
It may be time if you notice:
-
Chalky or dull patches
-
Yellowing around scuppers or water lines
-
Swirl marks or haze from previous polishing
-
Difficulty rinsing off dirt or stains
-
A finish that just won’t shine anymore
Sometimes the fix is simple; sometimes it takes a full restoration plan. Either way, addressing it early always preserves more gel coat in the long run.
Our approach
At Pacific Boats & Yachts, our goal isn’t to “sell coatings.” It’s to help owners protect their investment and enjoy boats that look great and are easier to maintain. We evaluate each vessel, talk through options, and recommend only what truly makes sense.
In many cases, that may mean compounding and polishing only — but when the surface has been restored, adding a Starke coating or maintenance sealant is highly recommended to protect that fresh finish and reduce how often heavy polishing is needed.
If you’re curious about whether your boat might benefit from gel coat restoration or Starke protection, we’re always happy to take a look and offer guidance — no pressure.
